We implement a play based emergent curriculum that is built on current research from the National Early Years Learning Framework (2009).
The EYLF defines play based learning as “a context for learning through which children organise and make sense of their social worlds, as they engage actively with people, objects and representations”. Echuca Road Kindergarten curriculum provides rich learning experiences developed through a strength/interest based approach. There is a balance between adult lead intentional teaching opportunities and child driven projects. This is determined by the interests and existing knowledge of the group, the diversity of the community and factors that impact on the community.
A calm, relaxed atmosphere is evident as children can move between experiences in a flexible environment that supports individual interests. There are many opportunities to engage in small meaningful groups during informal morning tea, in the playground or whilst sitting on the couch listening to a story. Indoor/outdoor play is offered children throughout the day.
We have an established open community garden space at the rear of our kindergarten where we encourage families to engage and participate in this area. Children access this area throughout the program to help them connect to the natural world to build and promote awareness of environmental and sustainable practices.
Our kindergarten works in partnership with Frank R Pullar Children’s Centre offering a Walking Bus Program where children can access care before and after our Kindergarten sessions.
We believe in the uniqueness and individuality of each child and their right to develop to their full potential through positive, effective learning experiences in their early years.
We value diversity and believe children should learn to respect and celebrate it through a wide range of experiences which support them in developing awareness of the different family backgrounds, cultures, abilities and values within our service and the wider community.
We provide an active, play-based, child-directed learning program which supports children to be confident in constructing their own knowledge and understanding at their own pace, building on their strengths and following their interests.
As educators, we work in a collaborative way, sharing our knowledge and expertise and reflecting on our practice, to create an environment which encourages children’s exploration of new ideas and enhances their social, emotional, physical, problem solving and life skills.
We support families in their parenting role and encourage the ongoing exchange of information to promote their child’s development and encourage all families to be active participators in the service and its activities.
Our closed Facebook Group enables families to connect and engage with each other as well as with what is happening at our service. We also share highlights, special events, reminders for celebrations, excursions and fundraising events. Once families are enrolled access to the closed page can be requested.
