Cultural Diversity and Inclusion Strategy

The Cultural Diversity and Inclusion Strategy was developed throughout 2011 and 2012 in consultation with a range of communities and organisations. It was formally adopted by Council on 20 March 2012.

When launching the Strategy, Member of Parliament the Hon Jeanette Powell stated that opportunities for immigrants in Australia are boundless; pointing out that she too was an immigrant who became a naturalised Australian and has since has the opportunity to become a member of state parliament.

Since its declaration as a town 150 years ago, Greater Shepparton has been the preferred destination for thousands of immigrants to Australia. Greater Shepparton City Council is proud of its history of welcoming many cultural groups and the resulting diverse community we now enjoy. Patterns of immigration are likely to continue as new emerging communities seek settlement in Australia.

Council's vision is for a vibrant, cohesive society which celebrates cultural diversity within daily life, recognises our strong cultural heritage and supports the ongoing development of a welcoming, inclusive and vibrant community. The Strategy is guided by the key directions of engagement, partnerships, leadership, celebration, advocacy and service provision.
