Artefact identification day at the Shepparton Art Gallery
The Shepparton Art Gallery and the Koorie Heritage Trust (KHT) are holding a free artefact identification day at the Shepparton Art Gallery on Friday 28 November 2008 between 10.00am and 2.00pm.
Archaeologists from Aboriginal Affairs Victoria and KHT staff will be available to provide specialist advice on the significance and care for a range of Aboriginal artefacts.Shepparton Art Gallery Acting Director Julie Adams said that Indigenous and non-Indigenous people are encouraged to bring artefacts that they may have to be identified.
"People may have artefacts in their homes and not realise what they are or how they fit within the story of Indigenous people of this region", Ms Adams said.
"This is an opportunity to find out more about the important culture and heritage of our local area by taking advantage of the specialist knowledge available.
"It is exciting to consider the possibilities of what might be uncovered on the day.
"The Gallery and KHT are keen to assist with promoting the knowledge and stories of the Goulburn Valley.
An exhibition will be held at the Gallery in June and July next year to showcase Aboriginal artefacts and artworks that are specific to this area.
"Works for this exhibition will be sourced from the permanent collections of the Gallery and KHT as well as other cultural institutions and private collections."
"Owners of particularly significant artefacts may be invited to loan items for the exhibition."
