Prescription drug misuse is a hidden epidemic. Prescription drugs now cause more deaths annually in Victoria than our road toll. Australia is following the United States into an epidemic of harm associated with prescription drug misuse.

With lack of services in pain management and higher rates of prescribing of pain medications and benzodiazepines, all regional communities are particularly affected now and in most regional areas, referrals to services for opioid dependence are largely driven by prescription drug misuse.

The Scriptwise forums use a series of expert and personal stories to open a dialogue at a local level with the aim of fostering a whole-of-community approach to preventing prescription medication misuse and overdose fatalities in Australia.

The events are well worth attending by any member of the community concerned about prescription drug misuse. We especially encourage consumers, primary care providers and pain, addiction and mental health specialists to attend.

Through this forum, we hope to inform participants about the safe and appropriate use of prescription medications, focusing on medications most susceptible to misuse.

Please also join us for light refreshments before this event.
