The SYIA provides regional young musicians the opportunity to perform and compete in a high quality organised music competition.

The 22nd of September 2018 is, this year, a Brass and Woodwind masterclass. Our adjudicator for the masterclass is musician and composer Brian Hogg. Brian Hogg has composed many of the concert band pieces that our students have played in Junior and Intermediate concert bands.

Students participating in the Masterclass perform a short piece and then work on different aspects of performance technique that will enhance their playing. Audience members are very welcome to observe the masterclass at no charge.

The competition begins on Sunday the 23rd of September from 9am. Sections of Brass, Woodwind, Percussion, Piano, Strings, and Vocal - organised into different age ranges - compete for placings and prize money. Each of the sections are adjudicated by high quality professional musicians.

This year we are very pleased to welcome Brian Hogg, Vanessa Sharman, and Joan Greenwood among our Adjudicators for 2018. Prize money for each section is donated each year from generous local businesses and musicians.

Winning competitors in certain sections then are awarded a place in the Gala Final Concert. The best musicians from across the day compete for the overall winner of the SYIA and a grand prize of $500. 2nd place is awarded $250 and 3rd prize is awarded $150. Each of these winning musicians are also offered performance opportunities with our community ensembles such as Turaton Choir and Goulburn Valley Concert Orchestra.

Tickets for our Gala Final Concert go on sale at Riverlinks Box Office in the weeks before the competition.
