Community celebrates to officially open Dookie Youth SPOT!

Yesterday the Dookie community celebrated the official opening of Stage 1 of their Youth SPOT, giving local young people a place to gather, play, socialise and enjoy.

The Youth SPOTS are being built across Greater Shepparton’s small towns, a result of Greater Shepparton City Council’s Small Town Youth Recreation Spaces Strategy.

The celebrations featured a BBQ lunch as local band Days of Daze performed for the occasion. Kids and young people were able to bring their scooters and skateboards and try out the new space.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Community Kaye Thomson is pleased to see Stage 1 of the project complete and looked forward to working with the community to seek funds to enable the future stages of the space take place.

“I would like to thank and congratulate the Dookie community on their fundraising efforts and helping bring this space to fruition. Their support and dedication to this project has been fantastic and I hope the community enjoys their new space.

“This is just the first of many Youth SPOTS to open across the region and I look forward to seeing kids and young people enjoying these spaces with their friends and family in their home towns,” said Ms Thomson.

Ramp it Up Committee Representative Janet Batten began the journey five years ago to help develop a youth gathering area, and is pleased to see the SPOT now officially open.

“I would like to thank the wonderful community of Dookie and surrounds for their support in the many Pub Meat, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas raffles to help with fundraising, the Greater Shepparton City Council and Councillors for all their assistance financially and with staff help in the vision for the development of this project, the Dookie Lions Club for running the BBQ lunch and support financially during the past five years, along with Lifestyle Dookie who’s members also supported this vision from the start.

“I hope everyone enjoys this area well into the future,” said Ms Batten.

Undera will be the next town to officially open Stage 1 of their Youth SPOT, located on the corner of Echuca and Madill Road.
