Wednesday White Ribbon Walk and Breakfast

Community members are invited to join a walk on White Ribbon Day and show their support for the campaign to end violence against women.

The walk, on Wednesday 25 November, will leave at 7.30am from the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club on Welsford Street with participants making their way to the Queen’s Gardens for a free breakfast. Information about White Ribbon Day will be available and community members will be invited to take the White Ribbon oath. Attendees will hear from guest speakers who will share their experiences with family violence.

Greater Shepparton Councillor Dinny Adem, who is MCing the event, encouraged people to get involved.

“White Ribbon Day is based on raising awareness and understanding of the underlying causes of violence against women through local initiatives undertaken in communities,” Cr Adem said.

“I encourage all community members to come together on 25 November and pledge not to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.”

Intimate partner violence is the most common type of violence against women, affecting 30 per cent of women worldwide, according to the 2013 World Health Organization report Global and regional estimates of violence against women: Prevalence and health effects of intimate partner violence and non-partner sexual violence.

Greater Shepparton City Council is partnering with local service providers to deliver this event.

Men are encouraged to visit whiteribbon.org.au for practical and safe ways to stand up against violence. As a symbol of their commitment to actively challenge violence, White Ribbon invites men to pledge the White Ribbon Oath never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.
