New Dookie Road and Wheeler Street intersection completed works.

Greater Shepparton City Council has completed works to upgrade the New Dookie Road and Wheeler Street intersection to better manage traffic flow through the intersection and improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.

Project complete

This project saw the upgrade of the existing intersection to a signalised “T”-intersection. Works included reconstructed road pavement designed for heavy vehicle traffic, dedicated slip and turning lanes, traffic signals, controlled pedestrian crossings, improved street lighting and extension to the shared path network linking to Verney Road. The project will incorporated relocation of above ground power assets, upgrade of the water main and telecommunication protection works.

About this project

This project is funded by the Federal Governments, Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program with work commencing Thursday 3 November 2022. Civil construction works will be commencing Monday 16 January 2023 with an anticipated completion during early-May 2023.

What is actually being done to New Dookie Road and Wheeler Street?

The works will include:

  • Construction of a signalised “T”-intersection.
  • Installation of new turning and slip lanes.
  • Full depth reconstructed road pavement designed for heavy vehicle traffic.
  • Installation of traffic signals, signage, line marking and road furniture.
  • Controlled pedestrian crossing via pedestrian operated traffic signals.
  • Improved street lighting.
  • Improved public lighting.
  • Construction of shared path at the intersection, with connection to Verney Road Intersection.
  • Relocation of existing vehicle crossover to 19-35 New Dookie Road.
  • Undergrounding of existing overhead power lines within the intersection.

How long will the works take?

The project will commenced Thursday 3 November 2022. Civil construction works commenced Monday 16 January 2023, and are now anticipated to compete by the start of May 2023.

Will New Dookie Road/Wheeler Street be closed to traffic during the works?

STAGE 1:

Construction first commenced on the westbound lane of New Dookie Road and the Wheeler Street intersection. During this stage, two way traffic was maintained along New Dookie Road, however Wheeler
Street (north) was closed for approximately six weeks, with no access from Wheeler St to New Dookie Road; or from New Dookie Road to Wheeler Street during this time. Saleyards access was via Wheeler Street (south) and the Saleyards main entry gates.

Stage 1 of construction works (southern side of New Dookie Road and Wheeler Street) is nearing completion and Stage 2 of construction works (north side of New Dookie Road) will commence from Monday 27 March.

STAGE 2

During Stage 2, traffic will be reduced to one lane, with the use of temporary traffic lights.

Access into Wheeler Street from New Dookie Road will be permitted but no access from Wheeler Street to New Dookie Road. Ash Street / New Dookie Road intersection will also be closed for the duration of construction. Please refer to the traffic plan above for further detail.

Delays to normal travel times are expected to occur and road users are asked to detour or allow extra time when planning.

How will I be able to access my home/business?

Business and residences along New Dookie Road and Wheeler Street still have access to their properties during the works; however, there may occasions where this is restricted for a short duration.

Pedestrian access will be maintained during the works and will be subject to changes from normal conditions.

Further updates will be provided once the contract has been awarded and detailed traffic management plans developed.

Who will be undertaking the works?

Local company Jarvis Delahey Contractors will be undertaking the works.

Will any of my services, such as power, water and/or waste collection be disrupted?

There may be some slight disruptions during water main replacement works. Prior notification will go out to notify of any works.

Where is the funding coming from? 

The project is 50/50 joint funded by Council and the Federal Government’s ‘Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity program’, with a contribution of $835,000 ex. GST. The total project cost is $1,670,000.
