The Shepparton Basketball Association saw a youngster named Maddie Garrick join the Junior Gators in 2002 and develop into a player who would eventually win a place with the Australian Opals.

Maddie was a standout junior who loved the game and played representative basketball with the Junior Gators program whilst travelling to Melbourne twice a week working her way through the Junior ranks with the Bulleen Boomers. She played for Country Victoria at under 16 and under 18 before joining the Bendigo Spirit in the WNBL as a 17 year old.

She earned gold at the Australian Youth Olympic festival and earned valuable experience at the 2011 Under 19 World Championships.

Maddie then made the move to the Institute of Sport She returned to the Spirit in 2012 and was part of back-to-back championships in 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

In 2014 season she averaged 19 points, seven rebounds and two assists to win the Most Valuable player award.

In 2015 Maddie joined the Melbourne Boomers where she has improved her performance and won the Most Valuable Player Award. In 2017 she earned a spot with the Australian Opals at the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup where they won a Silver Medal.

Maddie has played over 200 WNBL games and has reached the highest level in basketball.

The City of Shepparton congratulates Maddie and inducts her into the Junior Roll of Honour in the Sports Hall of Fame.
