Sport: Lawn Bowls

In the early 1990’s bowlers at Mooroopna Golf Bowls Club noticed a young 10 year old girl tagging along with her father who was bowling at the club.

She seemed to take a lot of notice of how the game was played and it was not long after she was on the greens learning how to play the sport. Stacey Collier was soon a name to be remembered as she started to show how much talent she had as a bowler. Top Mooroopna bowler Ian Russell noted her ability and commenced to coach her in the intricacies of the game. Tracey was a good learner she quickly reached a high level and was selected to be a member of the Victorian under 18 team, a position she held for 4 years. In 1998 Stacey played in the Under 18 state championships and won her first State title as the Victorian under 18 girls’ singles champion.

Stacey (at under age level) began to compete against the best open age bowlers in the State. She performed brilliantly locally and in the 1999/2000 season she won 3 Goulburn Valley titles in Singles, Fours and Champion of Champions.

She was in top form and won the 2000 Victorian Open Singles Championship and the Victorian 4s. But there was much more to come, she won selection as an Australian representative and travelled to New Zealand, Wales and Jersey and returned home as a “World Champion” with the World under 25 Singles title. Stacey won 12 titles during that season including Club, GV, State, Australian and world. She had really arrived as a top competitor.

Stacey then took a break from high level bowls to have a family. She had a busy life having 4 children but found time to pass on her knowledge about her sport when she formed the GV Devils development squad.

She has used career experience to be an ambassador for youngsters in the Goulburn Valley. Naturally her success brought a flood of engagements to speak about her experiences as a world champion.

She made her way back onto the Bowling greens in 2009 and found that she still had what it takes to be the GV Champion of Champions.

In subsequent years she won the GV Singles, Pairs (Twice) and Champion of Champions Pairs title, Stacey still enjoys the sport but is happy to remain at GV level.

Shepparton celebrates this lady who as a teenager rose to the top of her Region, her State her Country and the World as a lawn bowler. Welcome to the sports Hall of Fame, Stacey Collier.
