The sport of Badminton has been well represented in Shepparton sports awards over many years. Alan Rossignoli is one player who rose to the top of the sport as a junior.
He commenced playing with the St. Andrews Club at the age of 13 in 1968. Within twelve months he rose to prominence when he won the Shepparton Under 15 boys singles, doubles and mixed doubles and the under 17 doubles events. By 1970 he was playing in the Victorian Under 17 titles and was invited to play an exhibition match in front of Prince Charles and Princess Anne at the Albert Park Badminton Stadium.
The next year he performed well when selected in the Victorian junior team which won the Australian Championships. He also won the Mixed doubles and was runner up in the singles and doubles.1972 saw him represent Shepparton at Country Week and also invited to play an exhibition match at the opening of the new $175,000 Shepparton Sports Stadium. He also represented Shepparton in Country Week competition.
Alan continued to play with his Club St. Andrews and was a member of the club’s first win in the Shepparton A Grade competition.1973 was a special year when Alan moved to Melbourne to undertake an accounting degree. It was also a big year for his Badminton as he won the Australian triple crown of singles, doubles and mixed doubles at the National Championships. Only the second time that had been achieved.
In 1974 he was invited to play in the International Invitational Silver Bowl.
In 1975 he was selected to captain the inaugural Under 21 Victorian Colts team which won the National Colts Championships event. After juniors, he played at State League level in senior competition and returned to Shepparton to go into the Real Estate business. He also represented Shepparton in senior Badminton. Alan Rossignoli is now inducted into the Sports Roll of Honour.
