Work experience and placement

Council encourages work experience and professional placement for students in an innovative local government environment.

Here at Council, we help students meet their educational requirements and develop and enhance their skills so they gain an accurate perspective of the working environment in their chosen field.

Please provide Council with at least six weeks notice of your interest in undertaking work experience/placement.

Please note: Each application is considered on merit and is subject to availability. Unfortunately due to a high demand, we are not able to accommodate all work experience/placement requests and priority will be given to applicants that live within the Greater Shepparton City Council local government area.

Insurance coverage

If you are required to complete work experience or placement as part of your study or schooling, your college or school will have the appropriate public liability coverage.

Proof of insurance is to be supplied when requesting placement. Individuals not participating in college or school programs can apply for public liability coverage with insurance companies.

Work experience

Work experience is the short-term placement for secondary school students, generally from Years 9 and 10, with employers to provide insights into the industry and the workplace in which they are located. It provides students with the valuable opportunity to:

  • develop employability skills
  • explore possible career options
  • understand employer expectations
  • increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence.

Students are placed with employers primarily to observe and learn — not to undertake activities which require extensive training or expertise.
