Background
Existing drainage infrastructure
The Marungi Street (Nixon Street to Knight Street) Shepparton drainage catchment area is approximately 41,300m2. The Marungi Street 750mm wide brick trunk drain was originally a sewer and later transformed to stormwater. Historical plans indicate the system may have been constructed back in 1911.
Failures of existing drainage infrastructure
From the flood event in October 2022, the existing Marungi Street brick trunk drain collapsed in a few areas resulting in sink holes in the road pavement. Emergency repairs were undertaken locally at these collapsed sections of the brick drain.
Based upon underground CCTV inspection findings, it was determined that the following is required:
- Removal of the entire existing brick drain and existing concrete pipelines to prevent inevitable future drain collapses.
- Installation of a new concrete pit and drainage pipeline to be installed to replace the brick drain, following the alignment of existing brick drain and sized to service the current drainage catchment.
