BMX State Championships on this weekend

For some exhilaration and speed this weekend, come along and watch some of the best national and international BMX riders compete for the BMX State Championships.

The extreme and exhilarating rounds will run from Thursday to Sunday with no cost for spectators, all part of Greater Shepparton City Council’s 51 Days of Major Sporting Events.

This year’s event will see two extra days of competition compared to 2015, and is one of the biggest participation BMX events in the country.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development Johann Rajaratnam said securing the State Championships is a fabulous testament to our capability to attract state, national and world class sporting events, enhancing Shepparton as regional Victoria’s sporting event capital.

“BMX is a family friendly sport and encourages participation from all ages, so this event is a great fit for Shepparton. This year will see almost 40 per cent of riders come from interstate and international, which is a 20 per cent increase on last year’s event. Given our central location and easy access from most population centres we expect to see around 1,000 participants at the State Championships.

“The event will contribute to a bumper November for the region, as sports tourism stimulates our local economy, with the flow on effect benefiting our local businesses including accommodation, retail and hospitality providers. I encourage everyone to check out our website and come along to this event,” he said. BMX Victoria President Cameron Murray said “we are excited to again work with the Greater Shepparton Council and Shepparton BMX as hosts of the BMX Victoria State Championships. “The Shepparton BMX Club facility provided the best possible infrastructure and Council support to deliver a world-class event. As the largest State Championship in Australia we look forward to delivering another fantastic championship in Shepparton,” said Mr Murray. Shepparton BMX Club President Ash Robertson said the club was really looking forward to hosting the prestigious Victorian State Championships. “It gives us the ability to showcase our facilities and the sport to the Greater Shepparton community and is also a good opportunity for the club to develop capacity and earn funds to put back into developments of the facility,” he said.

The State Championships will be held from Thursday November 17 (practice day from 1.30 pm) Friday November 18 (pre titles day from 11am) Saturday November 19 (racing starts at 12.30pm), while on Sunday November 20 (racing from 10am). Both events will be live streamed via BMXV website – www.bmxv.com.au
