Greater Shepparton City Council appointed nine members to the first official Greater Shepparton Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Asexual and other sexuality, sex and gender diverse (LGBTIQA+) Advisory Committee at Tuesday’s Ordinary Council Meeting.
The establishment of a Greater Shepparton LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee was endorsed by Council at the March Ordinary Council Meeting, with the aim being to act as an advocacy and representative body. The committee will support and inform future Council directions on behalf of the LGBTIQA+ community, provide insight to decision making and ensure inclusive practices across Council.
Applications for the Advisory Committee were advertised within the community, with nine members successfully selected. Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said Council was extremely impressed with the quality and diversity of all applicants.
“The nine successful members will provide an exceptional foundation to the establishment of a proactive and informed Advisory Committee, and one which continues to strengthen Council’s commitment to equitable and inclusive practices,” she said.
“I thank each of the members for offering their time and expertise to be part of the inaugural committee.
“Council is focused on creating a welcoming environment for LGBTIQA+ community members to ensure their voice is valued, heard and respected. I have no doubt this committee will ensure we achieve and maintain this into the future.”
Advisory Committee members will serve a one-year term, from 17 August 2021 until 23 August 2022.
