Greater Shepparton City Council awarded two major contracts at the September Council Meeting, for the upgrade of the complex intersection that covers Wyndham Street/Railway Line/McIntosh Street/Hassett Street and Fitzjohn Street, and the revitalisation works on Maude Street.
The contract for the Wyndham Street/Railway Line/McIntosh Street/Hassett Street and Fitzjohn Street intersection upgrade was awarded to Apex Earthworks.
The Wyndham Street Intersection upgrade will increase the safety of one of the municipality’s busiest intersections, with the installation of traffic lights at the Wyndham Street/Railway Line/McIntosh Street/Hassett Street and Fitzjohn Street intersection.
As well as the traffic lights, the contract also includes replacement of the kerb and channel along the frontage of Victoria Park Lake and widening the parking lane north of Hayes Street.
Regional Roads Victoria, in partnership with Greater Shepparton City Council, identified the need for signalisation and in 2019 began the design process for the intersection. Apex Earthworks are due to begin works in early October, providing additional safe crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists, improving traffic flow and making turning movements easier and safer.
The second contract, for the revitalisation works on Maude Street between Vaughan Street and High Street, was awarded to Jarvis Delahey Contractors. The contract includes the conversion of the existing roundabout to a signalised intersection.
The Maude Street Revitalisation contract will see the completion of the remaining two stages of the four-stage project within Shepparton’s CBD completed.
The final two stages consist of the remaining Maude Street streetscape upgrade between Vaughan and High Streets, including hard streetscape work along footpaths, conversion of the roundabout to a signalised intersection, civil road upgrade and landscaping including installation of tree cells and street furniture. Importantly these works will allow the new bus interchange to become operational.
Works will not be undertaken during the month of December to assist local traders and the community during the peak Christmas trading period.
“These two projects are major upgrades for our region, and we are pleased to see contracts awarded so work can get underway,” Mayor Cr Seema Abdullah said.
“The new traffic lights at the Wyndham Street/Railway Line Intersection will cater for the existing railway line crossing, the Victoria Park Lake Caravan Park and the new Shepparton Art Museum entrances, and we hope to see these works completed early in the New Year.
“Stage 3 and 4 of the Maude Street upgrade are the final two stages of the Maude Street Revitalisation Project and will greatly enhance the amenity and functionality of this area.”
