Greater Shepparton City Council has taken a major step in reducing its electricity usage and greenhouse gas emissions by adding two Nissan Leaf electric vehicles to its fleet.
Council has recently been installing solar PV on key buildings in the municipality in an attempt to reduce electricity usage and greenhouse gas emissions, and is now turning its attention to the car fleet, which is a significant emitter of carbon through the use of fossil fuels.
The two electric vehicles arrived at Council in October and after being branded this month, have already hit our roads. Charging stations are positioned at both Council’s Welsford St offices and Doyles Road Complex.
Council’s Director Sustainable Development Geraldine Christou said the vehicles, which can be powered 100 per cent by renewable energy, are a step in the right direction for Council.
“Having these vehicles in our fleet will reduce our emissions, promote the benefit of energy efficient technologies that are driven by renewable energy and showcase that electric vehicles are feasible in a regional area,” she said.
“All the feedback we have received from drivers of electric vehicles tells us they are easy to drive, quick off the mark and most importantly, healthier for the environment. Keep an eye out for our vehicles around town.”
Council is a proud participant in the state-wide ‘Charging the Regions’ project. Charging the Regions is aimed at helping local governments across Victoria to understand their role in providing or facilitating public electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
