Council notes formation of new Youth Development Committee

Greater Shepparton City Council is set to establish a new Youth Committee aimed at strengthening engagement with young people across the municipality.

The committee will aim to provide young people with an opportunity to work collaboratively to develop initiatives and actions that represent the voice of local young people.

Council Manager Community Wellbeing Melanie Holt said the Greater Shepparton Youth Committee would provide a platform for young people’s voices to be heard.

“It will give local youth an opportunity to upskill in areas such as leadership, resilience, advocacy, partnerships and connection,” she said.

“The Youth Committee is an important priority within the Greater Shepparton Youth Strategy and Action Plan 2019-23.”

Expressions of Interest will open in the coming weeks with appointments occurring towards the end of July.

The Youth Committee will be made up of 12 young people that will meet in two groups of six, with members aging from 12 to 25 years.  The two groups will be divided into 12 to 17 years and 18 to 25 years.

The committee will focus on various opportunities to upskill and have a united voice, with applicants required to live, work or study within Greater Shepparton.

Ms Holt said committee members would be renewed on an annual basis to encourage greater youth engagement and diversity in members.

“Committee members will be supported by a Youth Development Officer, with members invited to contribute to a range of areas including Council policies, programs and activities,” she said.

“Members will also be able to lead and partner on the implementation of the Greater Shepparton City Council Youth Strategy and will be encouraged to participate in community consultation opportunities.

“We hope the committee provides a platform to upskill young people to increase their participation within all areas of community life.”

Expressions of interest for the Greater Shepparton Youth Committee will be advertised on the Council website later this month. For further information contact youth@shepparton.vic.gov.au, call or message Youth Development Coordinator Lynda Bruce on 0429 508 721.
