Greater Shepparton City Council is pleased to be attending Asia Fruit Logistica in November this year, to investigate and pursue potential opportunities for international trade across the region.
This will be the fourth time Council has led a delegation to the global expo which presents an opportunity to support one of Greater Shepparton’s largest industry sectors, partner with local growers and market the region as the fruit capital of Australia and a place to do business and invest.
At an Additional Council Meeting held on Tuesday 4 October, Councillors authorised Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali to attend the expo in Bangkok, Thailand, alongside Council’s Manager Economic Development and Economic Development Project Officer. The Greater Shepparton delegation will host a stand at the event in partnership with Fruit Growers Victoria and local growers.
Council led a delegation to Asia Fruit Logistica in 2017, 2018 and 2019 however there was no delegation in 2020 or 2021 due to COVID-19. Following the success of the trade stand in previous years, Cr Sali said the delegation was excited to attend once again and seek potential opportunities for the region.
“Greater Shepparton’s agricultural industry outputs $765 million in produce every year and our significant horticulture industry equates to $328 million, the majority of which is exported around the world,” he said.
“Having a trade stand at the expo will increase awareness of the region’s horticultural offering and build on the opportunity for agreements to be negotiated between overseas buyers and local growers.
“Our region’s fruit growers are supportive of this initiative and several will be attending to have trade negotiations.”
Cr Sali said the results from previous delegations were an indication of the value of attending the trade expo each year.
“The Asian market highly values government relations and growers believe that having Council involved in discussions with potential and existing clients will benefit their negotiations and help them reach agreements with buyers,” he said.
“The exhibition aligns with Council’s direction to enhance investment opportunities, build relationships with overseas investors and also aligns with Council’s International Engagement Strategy.
“I know firsthand how important the agricultural industry here is in Greater Shepparton and I am looking forward to showcasing our region’s growers on the world stage in November.”
The Asia Fruit Logistica is on from Wednesday 2 November to Friday 4 November 2022. For more information, visit the Asia Fruit Logistica website.
