Council seeking comment on Youth Spaces Strategy

Greater Shepparton City Council is seeking community feedback on its draft Small Town Youth Recreation Spaces Strategy, which was endorsed as a draft at Council’s March Ordinary Council Meeting.

Bus SPOTS (Social, Playful, Open, Township Spaces) have been proposed small towns in Greater Shepparton. Some SPOTS will have one stage, others two or three and the large SPOT will have four stages and every SPOT will have a social component. The four stages include:

  • Social – Social seating area, shelter (built or natural shade), place to read, access to power and Wi-Fi where possible, place for youth art
  • Play – Play area with active social elements which may include parkour bars, swings or trampolines
  • Active – Hard stand area for ball sports and spill out space for events / classes
  • Skate – Linear skate area with obstacles, ledges, rails, kickers

The strategy has been developed in response to an identified need by Council’s community planning groups to plan for the future of youth recreation spaces across the municipality.

The strategy focuses on 11 small towns in Greater Shepparton – Arcadia, Congupna, Dookie, Katandra West, Merrigum, Mooroopna, Murchison, Tallygaroopna Tatura, Toolamba and Undera

Greater Shepparton Mayor Dinny Adem encouraged young people to have their say.

“This strategy is very important in terms of providing places for our young people to meet, play and be active,” Cr Adem said.

“I commend everyone involved in developing the strategy and would like to thank the young people who have so far had input into the draft.”

Feedback will be received until 27 April and can be made on Council’s website, or by contacting Council’s Neighbourhoods Team on (03) 5832 9700.
