Greater Shepparton City Council will now hear in-person submissions from residents who wish to be heard on the proposal to sell or gift the land above the Maude, Nixon and Edward Streets Car Park.
Community consultation on the proposal closed on Monday, 28 February 2022, with Council officers now working through each of the submissions to be considered. As part of the feedback process, residents and business owners were able to request for their submission to be heard by Council in-person.
These presentations will take place across two days, from 1pm to 7pm on Monday, 7 March 2022 and from 9.10am to 9pm on Tuesday, 8 March 2022. The presentations will be held at the Eastbank Centre in Shepparton, with each submitter given six minutes of speaking time or ten minutes in total. Councillors will be provided with a copy of the submission prior to each presentation to assist with any questions.
These in-person submissions form part of Council’s community consultation to understand the thoughts and concerns of nearby residents and the community regarding the proposal to sell or gift the Council-owned car park for future development as social housing.
It comes after Council received a proposal request from Beyond Housing and Wintringham in late 2021. Both organisations are Registered Housing Associations with long histories of supporting vulnerable members of the community through a range of innovative housing and support services. Upon completion, Council would take back possession of the ground floor car park land, and Beyond Housing and Wintringham would manage the residents’ parking and apartments.
Following the in-person submissions, Council will consider all submissions and may decide to sell the land, part of the land or not to sell the land at a future Council Meeting in 2022.
Mayor, Councillor Kim O’Keeffe thanked each of the residents and community members who provided their feedback to Council on the proposal.
“Community feedback is an essential step in the process of considering a proposal of this nature, and we would like to thank everyone who provided their feedback during the consultation period,” she said.
“We look forward to hearing from submitters in person next week. This feedback we receive will then be considered, and help us make an informed and appropriate decision.”
