The awards aim to recognise the invaluable work of the owners and guardians of our cultural heritage, while promoting the benefits of cultural heritage conservation by highlighting good practice.
This year, the first ever nomination in the ‘Student/Youth Contribution’ category was received, highlighting the growth of the awards and cultural heritage conservation in the region.
Mayor Cr Kim O’Keeffe and the Hon Damian Drum MP presented the awards to the winners.
Cr O’Keeffe said the quality of nominations for this year’s Cultural Heritage Awards proves there is no shortage of outstanding contributions to cultural heritage in our municipality.
“I congratulate all the winners and nominees on their outstanding commitment to cultural heritage conservation and look forward to the next Cultural Heritage Awards to be held in 2021,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“The success of this year’s awards demonstrates the increasing community understanding and pride in our history and heritage.”
Cr O’Keeffe highlighted the dedication of the volunteers on the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee, who worked extremely hard to develop and coordinate the awards.
Council looks forward to supporting the Heritage Advisory Committee in continuing to raise the profile of heritage in Greater Shepparton.
Nominations for the Cultural Heritage Awards were open from 22 August to 7 December 2018.

The sympathetic renovations allow the building to be appreciated by the public as a commercial acupuncture and Chinese medicine clinic. |
| Restoration of a Heritage Place | Katandra West Cenotaph | This project includes the relocation of the Katandra West Cenotaph, which was erected following World War II, to a more prominent community location, as well as landscaping and lighting to promote community appreciation of the Cenotaph. |
| Maintenance of a Heritage Place | St Patrick’s Church, Moorilim | For the continued maintenance of the former St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Moorilim. This building demonstrates exceptional maintenance, including recent repairs to the slate roof and repainting. |
| Best Research Publication or Manuscript | Remembering the Dookie Fallen: 100 Years On | This high quality publication honours 16 men on the local war memorial who enlisted at Dookie, Victoria. The publication demonstrates background research that informs an insightful historical document that is being appreciated internationally. |
| Other Publication | Art Captured: Hans-Wolter von Gruenewaldt, Prisoner of War Camp 13 Murchison: His Story and His Art | This publication promotes the remarkable story of German civilian Hans-Wolter von Gruenewaldt and his years as a Prisoner of War. It raises awareness of the prolific, diverse and talented artwork that was produced in the camps in the Goulburn Valley. |
| Student/Youth Contribution | Signage to The Flats (Wilmot Road Primary School) | This project demonstrates the exceptional dedication of Year 5/6 students at Wilmot Road Primary School. The students researched the importance of The Flats and presented a strong case to Council for erection of signage along the Midland Highway. |
| Interpretive Signage | Signage at Tallygaroopna Station Park, site of the former Tallygaroopna Railway Station | This signage recognises the historical significance of the former Railway Station and the silos at Tallygaroopna through informative text and photographs. The signage provides a key opportunity to disseminate our history to residents and visitors through an accessible platform. |
| Community, Multicultural and Indigenous Events and Tourism | Multicultural Bus Tours (Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District Inc.) | These bus tours, conducted by the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District Inc., assist in breaking down barriers and building effective relationships between communities. The tours provide an exceptional opportunity to disseminate our multicultural history to our residents and visitors. |
| Other Contribution | Weeping Window installation (St Luke’s Anglican Church, Dookie) | This commemorative project promotes the centenary of the armistice that ended World War I through a creative, visual platform. The project demonstrates strong research, promotion, education and exceptional community spirit. |
