Greater Shepparton residents are encouraged to have their say on the draft Creative City Strategy after it was released for public consultation at Tuesday’s Ordinary Council Meeting.
In January this year, Greater Shepparton City Council appointed an independent arts consultant to develop a Creative City Strategy for the Greater Shepparton region. Following extensive consultation with Councillors, staff, key stakeholders and the community, the draft strategy is ready to be released to the public for a three week consultation and feedback period.
At the end of the three-week period, feedback will be considered and incorporated into the final document with the final strategy to be presented to Council for adoption.
“In helping inform the draft Creative City Strategy, consultation took place in March and April this year with a series of interviews, workshops, an online survey and community forum,” Acting Director Community David Booth said.
“Desktop research was also conducted to analyse the creative sector and its potential development in the region. Based on the consultation and research conducted, the draft Creative City Strategy was developed for consideration.”
Key components of the strategy include an articulated vision and eight key directions including championing First Nations art and culture, ensuring the arts are for everyone, celebrating diversity and supporting creative businesses. An action plan was also developed to ensure the delivery of the strategy, which details objectives, tasks and key responsibilities.
Mr Booth said a strong message that came from the consultation was that Council should not directly drive or deliver the strategy actions and outcomes themselves.
“The feedback suggested instead that Council should provide leadership, advocacy, empowerment and facilitation to enable the community to carry out that role. This principle is embedded in the strategy,” he said.
“We encourage residents to take a look at the draft document to ensure that it nurtures a community that encourages and celebrates creativity. All feedback is welcomed.
“We particularly want to know the community’s thoughts on the plan, what they like, what they are most excited for and if they think there is anything missing from the draft strategy.”
The draft Creative City Strategy will be open for final public consultation for a period of three weeks commencing today, Wednesday, 22 September and concluding on Saturday, 16 October. To have your say on the draft strategy, visit Shaping Greater Shepparton website.
