Greater Shepparton City Council is developing a new Heritage Strategy for the region to plan how it acknowledges the distinct heritage of the municipality, with residents encouraged to share their feedback to help shape the document.
In Summary
The Greater Shepparton Heritage Strategy aims to promote and support heritage-related activities over the next ten years, with the aim of conserving and integrating significant reminders of our heritage for the benefit of current and future generations. The existing strategy was completed in 2019 and is now due for complete review.
The previous strategy supported the development of the Heritage Study in 2020 which identified individually significant places and precincts in Greater Shepparton. These have been incorporated in Council’s Planning Scheme to offer protection of heritage places across the municipality.
Now that Council has completed a significant amount of work to identify sites and put in place protections for these buildings, it is seeking community direction for its next Heritage Strategy. A survey has been established on Council’s Shaping Greater Shepp website to gather feedback on how the community values heritage, engages with the region’s history, and any activities they would like to see developed to promote tourism.
“Greater Shepparton has played an important but also unique part in Australia’s history. This can be seen through our region’s strong irrigation ties, early European settlement, immigration, and war history,” Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali said.
“Residents are encouraged to let us know the types of heritage activities they would like to participate in but also what they would like to see developed to promote heritage tourism in the region. All feedback is welcomed and will help shape the next Greater Shepparton Heritage Strategy.”
Feedback can be provided until Sunday 27 July 2025. Tap here to find out more or to complete the survey.
Hard copy surveys are available at Council’s Customer Service Counter at 90 Welsford Street, Shepparton.
