Greater Shepparton backs regional roads advocacy push

Greater Shepparton City Council has welcomed Regional Cities Victoria's renewed focus on regional road investment, noting the campaign aligns with Council's ongoing advocacy for improved transport infrastructure and safer, more reliable road networks across the region.

The advocacy campaign highlights 30 priority roads across Victoria's regional cities requiring urgent attention, including three key routes within the Greater Shepparton region: the Goulburn Valley Highway and Hume Freeway connection, Echuca Road to Murray Valley Highway, and Tatura-Murchison Road.

Deputy Mayor, Cr Geoff Akers said the campaign aligns closely with Council's ongoing advocacy for strategic investment in regional transport infrastructure.

“Greater Shepparton is a major regional centre and a critical freight and logistics hub. Reliable road infrastructure is essential to supporting our residents, businesses and industries, while maintaining connections across regional Victoria,” he said.

“Council has consistently advocated for increased investment in regional roads and welcomes efforts that draw attention to the condition of key transport routes and the need for long-term funding solutions.”

Cr Akers said investment in regional roads delivers significant benefits for community safety, economic growth and productivity.

“Our region contributes significantly to Victoria's agricultural production, food processing and freight sectors. Maintaining and improving the road network is vital to supporting these industries and ensuring people can move safely and efficiently throughout our region,” he said.

“Targeted investment in regional roads is essential to meeting the needs of growing communities and supporting future economic development.”

Council welcomes the Victorian Government's additional commitment to road maintenance and encourages continued investment in regional infrastructure to address longstanding maintenance backlogs and support the needs of regional communities.

“Regional road networks are critical public assets and require ongoing investment to ensure they remain safe, resilient and fit for purpose,” Cr Akers said.

“Council will continue to advocate for infrastructure investment that strengthens regional connectivity, improves road safety and supports the continued growth of Greater Shepparton and regional Victoria.”
