Greater Shepparton City Council will welcome 35 new citizens at a citizenship ceremony to mark 2014 Citizenship Day on Wednesday 17 September.
The countries of origin of our newest citizens include Iraq, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, United States, India, Pakistan, Thailand, New Zealand and China.
Greater Shepparton Mayor Jenny Houlihan said the day was an opportunity to reflect on the importance of citizenship as a common bond strengthening the local community.
“Australian Citizenship Day is a chance for us to welcome our newest citizens and also remind ourselves of the rights and privileges of Australian citizenship,” Cr Houlihan said.
“An Australian citizenship ceremony celebrates the final stage of someone’s migrant journey and represents their ongoing commitment to their adopted country and to Australian values.”
This year Greater Shepparton has welcomed more than 150 new Australian citizens.
