Greater Shepparton will host the Australian U14 Girls Club Basketball Championships at the Shepparton Sports Stadium next week.
The event will be held from 1 October until 6 October during the school holidays and will see 24 teams and over 1,000 visitors from around Australia converge onto Greater Shepparton.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said “Isn’t it wonderful we are hosting another amazing national sporting event in Shepparton. This event is expected to generate more than $500,000 to the local economy. Players and their families will be spending money across the week at local businesses and keeping our local economy strong.”
“Basketball players really enjoy coming to play in Shepparton because we are such a welcoming community and they are able to experience everything we have on offer. I hope they all enjoy their time over the six days of competition.”
“Hosting this event clearly shows we are the event capital and are really forging ahead by having amazing local sporting associations capable of hosting large championship events that bring in people from all around Australia,” said Cr O’Keeffe.
Paul Maley, General Manager Competitions said “Basketball Australia is excited to be bringing an Australian Basketball Championship to Shepparton for the first time. Greater Shepparton City Council and the Greater Shepparton Basketball Association have proven themselves to be fantastic hosts of numerous events and we look forward to our basketball community experiencing their region and hospitality.”
Greater Shepparton Basketball Association General Manager Stacey Cole said “The GSBA is excited to once again be involved with hosting such an important National event for the local region. The week-long event is the culmination of many months of planning for the GSBA in conjunction with Basketball Australia. We have over 100 volunteers involved with the Nationals this week.”
“The GSBA has a proud history of hosting many successful basketball events over the years. The U14 Championships will bring teams from all over Australia to showcase some very high level basketball for the local basketball community, including our very own Shepparton Gators U14 girls team playing in the event.”
