Greater Shepparton is buzzing as the 51 days of major sporting events officially kicked off with BMX Victoria pre state titles and the Victorian Mountain Bike Downhill Series in mid-October.
Greater Shepparton is now in its third week of the campaign which will run through to Sunday 4 December.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development Johann Rajaratnam said “Council strives to attract the biggest and best events to Greater Shepparton bringing various benefits to our municipality including employment, tourism, visitation, liveability and local spending, all stimulating our local economy.
“These 14 key state, national and international major events will see more than 20,000 visitors converge on our region and generate over 30,000 bed nights to our accommodation industry. Blockbuster sell out weekends will inject approximately $8million into our local economy.
“Holding these events also supports Council’s plan to build quality facilities for our community, further enhancing Shepparton’s profile as a regional sporting event capital.
“The Australian Football Skools International Championships held on the weekend was the first event to see the new community football complex in use at the Greater Shepparton Regional Sports Precinct. The event attracted 120 teams, 1,500 players and over 3,000 visitors from around Victoria, interstate and overseas, generating an economic boom across the broader region.
“Sports tourism is an integral part of our major events calendar and I encourage everyone to come along to these events, and encourage local businesses to leverage these exciting opportunities to get their tills ringing” he said.
