Greater Shepparton to host Junior Road Championships

Cycling Australia has announced Greater Shepparton as the host city for the 2021 Junior Road Championship.

Greater Shepparton City Council is excited to see this event return to the region adding to the calibre of state, national and international cycling events hosted to date.

Greater Shepparton City Council Chief Executive Officer Peter Harriott said the cycling event would bring the best junior talent from around Australia to our region on the 24-26 September 2021.

“We are excited to welcome our nation’s upcoming cycling sensations to Greater Shepparton in September next year. In the past we’ve seen young athletes such as Caleb Ewan win national junior titles in our region, and now he’s conquering the world winning stages at the Tour De France. We’re looking forward to be able to see future stars in action,” Mr Harriott said.

“Greater Shepparton has hosted a number of cycling events over the years and it is wonderful to continue our strong partnership with AusCycling to host the Junior Road National’s. Together we will prepare to deliver a safe event that will adhere with any state and federal COVID-19 guidelines.”

The three day event is expected to see more than 400 riders and their support teams travel to the region from all of Australia, contributing to an estimated $500,000 plus economic boost for our accommodation, hospitality and visitor economy sectors.

“Our community is ready to safely welcome visitors to our region and enjoy the Many Great Things we have to offer, cycling has grown even more popular over the months during COVID-19 restrictions and we encourage locals and visitors to support the event and go out and enjoy for themselves the many cycling paths that wind through the region taking in our landscapes,” Mr Harriott said.

AusCycling General Manager – Events & Racing Kipp Kaufman was excited by the opportunity to confirm the National Championships for 2021 and 2022.

“Securing these championship host cities will provide unique racing opportunities for the riders as well as providing certainty to our athletes,” Mr Kaufman said.

Along with Greater Shepparton, the Sunshine Coast will be hosting the 2021 Masters Road Championships and Wollongong and Kiama hosting the 2022 Junior and Masters Road Championships.
