Greater Shepparton was today named host of the 2018 School Sport Australia Football (Soccer) Championships event.
The championships will see 16 under boys and 18 under girls participate the week-long event from August 25, 2018 at Shepparton Sports City.
Greater Shepparton Mayor Dinny Adem said this event builds on Greater Shepparton’s reputation as a leading regional sporting event destination.
“This event will see visitors from all around Australia converge on Greater Shepparton, over a weeklong period spending time and money in our region and helping support local businesses across the tourism, accommodation, hospitality and retail sectors,” Cr Adem said.
“The event compliments other major events recently secured to the region including the 2017 Greater Shepparton Golf Masters, 2018 the Victorian Long Course Swimming Championships in January, a round of the International Beach Volleyball World Tour and Victorian Little Athletics Northern Country Track and Field Championships in February, Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Basketball Classic in March and the Shepparton Squash International in August.”
“This will be a great opportunity for our region to profile our state-of-the-art soccer facilities at our $21 million redeveloped Shepparton Sports City and for local clubs and associations to be involved to raise funds and build their capacity to host significant major events”
School Sport Victoria National Programs Manager, Ian Landy said “the event is designed to be an enjoyable and social experience providing players with a chance to relax and have fun as well as demonstrate their skills”.
“School Sport Victoria has developed a great relationship with Greater Shepparton having recently hosted the Victorian Teachers Games and the National Championships for both 12 & Under and 18 & Under Tennis at the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club. The development of the Shepparton Sport City precinct has us excited to bring the National Football (Soccer) Championships to the area which is developing a reputation for being able to host high quality sporting events.”
The 2018 event will be held from Sunday August 25 to Friday 31 August, 2018
