In preparation for the upcoming summer weather and the predicted hot weather forecast for Monday 16 December 2024, we've identified a list of cooling centres across the region for use by the community.
The Greater Shepparton community is advised to prepare for hot weather on Monday, which is currently forecast as an ‘Extreme’ Fire Danger Rating day. To remain informed on the local fire danger ratings, and Total Fire Ban Declarations, visit cfa.vic.gov.au and look for the North Country Forecast District (which includes Greater Shepparton).
Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to stay safe in the heat, including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat times, and checking on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbours. In addition, Council advises residents to monitor updates regarding potential service closures or changes to operations due to fire danger ratings.
Anyone can suffer from heat-related health problems such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, trigger sudden medical episodes or worsen medical conditions. Those more at risk include older people, young children and people with a medical condition.
The Department of Health website contains information on extreme heat and advice on practical tips to protect yourself and others.
Several cooling centres across the region have been identified to provide residents relief from high temperatures. These designated locations offer air-conditioned environments where community members can escape the heat and lower their core body temperature.
Council’s Director Community, Louise Mitchell, said the identification of specific locations that the community can access and attend during hot conditions is essential.
“Knowing where they can go during these events will provide a sense of relief to those most affected and in need of support,”
“We understand that heat and hot weather can be challenging and even dangerous for many in our community and the cooling centres are there to provide a safe, comfortable place for everyone during these conditions. We encourage residents to take advantage of these facilities to stay safe and cool,” she said.
Those attending any of the centres are encouraged to bring along any necessary medications, a water bottle to stay hydrated and any personal items for comfort that they may need, e.g. book.
