More time to share your thoughts on Council’s role in 26 January

Greater Shepparton City Council has extended the closing date for community consultation to gather feedback on how 26 January is marked in Greater Shepparton.

Consultation is currently open and was expected to close at 5pm on Friday 26 May 2023. To allow for the community to have their say on this important consultation, the closing date has been extended one week and will now close at 5pm on Friday 2 June 2023.

To share feedback, residents can visit the Shaping Greater Shepp website, or collect a hardcopy survey from the Council Offices at 90 Welsford Street, Shepparton.

The consultation comes after Council resolved in October 2022 to take a number of actions in relation to how 26 January is marked in Greater Shepparton. Council resolved to advocate to the Australian Government for a change of date for Australia’s national holiday, and to continue community engagement to inform a Council decision about Council’s role on 26 January in 2024 and beyond.

Council also resolved to conduct community engagement on the idea of having a day of community celebration that is not held on 26 January, which is inclusive, reflects the full history of Australia, and is culturally respectful. These decisions were informed by engagement with a community stakeholder group representing diverse community interests.

Council is now inviting community members to share their views about the way forward for 2024 and beyond.

The feedback received will be reviewed alongside the information gathered in 2022, and a proposal will be developed for the future of Council’s role on 26 January in Greater Shepparton.

To share your feedback, please visit the Shaping Greater Shepp website Shaping Greater Shepparton

For further information or assistance with completing the survey, phone Council on (03) 5832 9700.
