Works to construct a roof on the outdoor arena at Tatura Park have started.
Construction is currently underway on roofing components with installation, electrical works and painting all due to be completed by the end of July.
Council’s Director Sustainable Development Johann Rajaratnam said roofing the arena would provide an ability to attract an increased range of regional and national events.
“Last year alone Tatura Park hosted 54 bookings including significant state, national and international events. Some well-known ones included International Dairy Week, National Welsh Pony Show, National Cutting Horse Victorian Futurity Championships and the Bonnie & Clyde Rockabilly Festival.” Mr Rajaratnam said.
“This project was identified in the Tatura Park master plan in 2006 and is the final component of the existing master plan. Over this period we have seen the facility transform into a year round tourism attraction growing from 16 bookings and events in 2006 to now achieving in excess of 50 events per year. It is an important component in driving significant economic development for the township of Tatura and the broader Greater Shepparton region.
“Around 30,000 people attended and spectated at events over the last 12 months generating about 25,000 bed nights for the region.
“The works, when complete will allow for improved amenities for annual major event users as well as provide the region with a competitive advantage in bidding for major equestrian events. We are as we are now one of only two facilities in Victoria with two undercover arenas.
“Complementing other existing facilities at the site including the Ballantyne Centre, over 200 permanent stables camping and catering facilities, the project really positions Tatura Park as a leading facility in Regional Australia and helps further build Greater Shepparton’s reputation as a key event and sporting destination.”
