Wear purple to raise awareness of elder abuse this June

Greater Shepparton City Council will be marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day by lighting the Mooroopna Water Tower and the big Gum Tree in Monash Park purple on 15 June to help raise awareness of the issue.

Elder abuse is any act which causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust such as a family member or friend. The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect.

Greater Shepparton Mayor Dennis Patterson encouraged people wear purple to show their support for ending elder abuse.

“This is an opportunity to raise awareness about elder abuse, which many people would not be aware of in our community,” Cr Patterson said.

“Our older residents are among the most vulnerable and we all need to come together and ensure their safety.”
