Greater Shepparton City Council will this week commence preparation works at Victoria Park Lake for the forthcoming Challenge Shepparton.
A harvester boat will be on the lake for three days to cut Ribbon Weed to limit the amount of the plant growing near the surface and pieces breaking off, washing up on banks and floating on the surface within the recreational activity areas.
The process involves use of an aquatic harvester boat, which cuts the plant below the surface and through use of a conveyor, stores the material on board for later disposal.
Council’s Director Infrastructure Steve Bowmaker said this work would ensure the lake was prepared to a high standard for the event.
“Our staff have been working to prepare the lake and surrounding areas for the coming triathlon to ensure it is well presented for event participants, visitors and locals,” Mr Bowmaker said.
“Rest assured, the fish and animals living in the lake won’t be harmed as they scatter from the sounds and vibrations from the machine. Ribbon Weed will remain in the wetland and other areas for animal habitat.”
