Your small acts make a big impact on our waste

Sustainability Victoria on behalf of the Victorian Government has launched a new campaign, Small Acts Make a Big Impact, making it easier for Greater Shepparton to find ways to reduce waste and recycle correctly.

Small Acts Make a Big Impact highlights eleven small actions Greater Shepparton residents can do to reduce their waste and recycle well that collectively will have a big impact on the environment and Greater Shepparton’s sustainable future. By jumping online and answering a short set of questions on the Sustainability Victoria website, residents can find a small act that works for them to take action today.

In 2021, 21 per cent of the recyclable materials collected from Victorian household recycling bins had to be sent to landfill, partly due to high levels of contamination. By checking council information to make sure waste and recycling is sorted correctly, residents can help reduce this amount and ensure more valuable resources can be made into new things.

With single-use plastics making up a third of the litter seen in Victoria’s streets, parks and waterways, where they cause harm to wildlife and our health, if Greater Shepparton residents took the small action of remembering their reusable bags, this could help reduce the number of plastic bags piling up in landfill and littering our environment.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said “By making small changes to how you manage waste and recycling, such as planning weekday dinners, remembering your reusable water bottle when you leave home, or taking used batteries to a recycling drop-off point, you can help have a big impact on Greater Shepparton sustainable future.

“A simple act is returning soft plastics back to the supermarkets such as bread bags. Remember to take your reusable bags when you do head out to the shops”.
