Council is pleased that the project is on schedule with 23 per cent of the total project works completed to date.
Stage One works
Demolition works are complete on the north side of the intersection with the exception of the western footpath to maintain access to schools in the vicinity.
All drainage works within this stage have also been completed with drainage for the entire project now 75 per cent complete.
Preparation for the kerb and channel construction and the excavation for road pavement is currently under way and around 35 per cent complete.
Preparatory works for the installation of the underground conduits and pits necessary for the traffic signal installation have commenced.
Access to Verney Road School is being maintained with minor changes made to parking time limits at the Conifer Street shops.
Upcoming works
Stage One kerb and channel works will continue with further excavation of the road pavement on Balaclava Road approaching the intersection.
During the school holidays, demolition of the remaining section of the footpath and construction of footpath on the west side of Verney Road and the north side of Balaclava Road will commence to minimise disruption.
For more details on Stage One's traffic management plan visit the project page.
Neighbouring Street Conditions
Council is closely monitoring the condition of streets neighbouring the Verney / Balaclava intersection upgrade to ensure safety of road users and residents.
Deterioration of road surfaces has been identified in some areas with plans in place to undertake interim repairs for the duration of the intersection works.
Council’s road renewal program incorporates more substantial road upgrade works in some locations after the intersection upgrade has been completed.
