After a seven month improvement project the Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum will officially open the new Tatura Museum Exhibition Gallery this Sunday.
Standing on Tatura’s main road for more than 130 years the museum building was in need of renovation works to accommodate and preserve their historically significant collection.
Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Neighbourhoods Amanda Tingay said the works have made a great difference to the building.
“It may not look very different from the outside but the inside works have transformed the space. The building has extended 240 square metres which will allow for more exhibiting space as well as more storage space which will be better for preserving the collection,” Ms Tingay said.
“This has been an impressive project for the building and on behalf of Council we would like to thank the Historical Society for their generous contribution of $81,000.”
Sunday 15 September Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Kim O’Keeffe will officially open the Exhibition Gallery to coincide with the museums first exhibition since the redevelopment, Migration and the Refugee: The Art of Erwin Fabian. At 103 years of age, artist Erwin Fabian will be bringing never before shown works to the Tatura museum for the official opening.
Fabian was deported to Australia alongside 2000 other ‘enemy aliens’ in 1940 at the age of 25. Today he is one of Australia’s most significant modern artists, with a decades-long career as a sculptor and painter.
To open the Migration and the Refugee: The Art of Erwin Fabian exhibition will be special guest Australian Logie winner Jana Wendt.
The museum will be open on Sunday from 1pm with official proceeding starting at 2pm. Tickets are $30 at the door with proceeds going towards the Museum.
