The spread of Queensland Fruit Fly poses a serious threat to the region’s horticulture industry along with domestic and international trade opportunities. A range of fruit and vegetables are at risk of infestation, including pome fruit, stone fruit, tomatoes, berry fruits, cherries, citrus and grapes. 

Home gardeners and producers should treat QFF on their property through a range of management methods as you would for any other pest. A wide variety of products to control flies and protect fruit from damage are available from nursery, chemical resellers and hardware stores.

How can we help?

The Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Fruit Fly Group (GMVRFFG) was activated in 2016 to strengthen fruit fly management across the region.  Measures and strategies have been funded by the Victorian Government's Managing Fruit Fly Regional Grant Program.

It is essential people implement control measures such as setting traps, baiting, spraying and using netting to provide a physical barrier to stop female QFF reaching fruit and laying its eggs.

The removal of fruit trees should be considered if you have unwanted trees in your residential yard. The free Urban Fruit Tree Removal Program is available to Greater Shepparton residents. Trees are removed and disposed of by a registered and insured private contractor at no cost to the property owner as part of the program.
