ANZAC Commemorative Naming Project

The ANZAC Commemorative Naming Project recognises the 100 year anniversary of the first ANZAC landings at Gallipoli in 1915. During the ANZAC centenary period (2014-18), the Victorian Government is conducting a commemorative naming project in partnership with naming authorities across the State.

The Project is an opportunity for Victorians to acknowledge men and women in the community who have served in an operational capacity in the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces or those in the community that have displayed the ANZAC spirit during World War I (1914-1918). Victorians are being asked to research these people from their municipalities and provide proposals to their local councils.

The ANZAC Commemorative Naming Project offers an opportunity for the community, developers and Greater Shepparton City Council to recognise and record the wartime service and sacrifice of Greater Shepparton’s military service people and locals who supported Australia and New Zealand's military cause during World War I.

There will also be the opportunity to:

  • Record the history behind the names in Victoria's register of geographic names, VICNAMES.
  • Record in VICNAMES the history of existing roads, features or localities already named in honour of service people.

It is envisaged that a compendium of commemorative names will be prepared and endorsed by Council later in the year. A copy of this compendium will be made available by Council to local schools, libraries, etc. Those names that are found to be currently in use within the municipality will have their history recorded on the State government's register of geographic names, VICNAMES. There is also scope for names to be used in the future naming of roads, geographic features and localities within Greater Shepparton.
