What is the Election (Caretaker) Period?
The election period requires Council to comply with special arrangements during the time of Council Elections to ensure the probity of the election process. This ensures that the election process is conducted in an environment that is open and fair to all candidates.
Caretaker Mode ensures that public resources, including staff resources, are not used in election campaigning or in a way that may improperly influence the result of an election, or improperly advantage existing Councillors as candidates in the election.
The current Council will also avoid making significant new policies or decisions that could unreasonably bind a future Council. During this period, Council will continue to decide upon statutory matters, such as planning permit applications, and carry out its normal everyday services.
These conditions apply to all Council facilities and services including, but not limited to:
- Aquamoves
- Riverlinks
- KidsTown
- Children’s Services
- Events and Tourism
- Maternal and Child Health
- Sports Stadiums and Facilities
- Greater Shepparton Business Centre
- Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre; and
- Word and Mouth.
