The film is set in 1946 and follows a London-based writer who exchanges letters with a resident on the island of Guernsey, which had been under German occupation during World War II. The writer forms an unexpected bond with the residents when she decides to write a book about their experiences during the war. She then learns the secret they are afraid to reveal.
