Greater Shepparton has been announced as the host as one of the rounds of the 2016 BMX Australia National Series.
The series is set to be held over seven absorbing rounds on some of the best tracks in the country, and promises to be the best series to date, with racing to be held in south-east Queensland, Queensland’s far north coast and Victoria before finally concluding at the 2016 BMX National Championships in Bathurst.
BMX Australia Events Director Steve Dinmore said the compression year had been built around the Olympics in Rio, and had been encouraged by the level of interest shown by a number of clubs throughout the country. “Due to the Olympics, the UCI BMX World Championships have been moved forward and as a result so have the Subaru BMX National Championships,” Dinmore said.
“So this in turn has narrowed our window of opportunity to hold the BMX Australia National Series.
“It was also pleasing to see so many clubs offering to host a round, which will provide us with more scope to choose clubs in 2017.
“We had a record number of expressions of interest, and hopefully they can continue their interest for 2017.”
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development Johann Rajaratnam said hosting a round of this event further enhances Greater Shepparton reputation as a leading major sporting event destination in Australia “Hosting the BMX Australia National Series complements our exciting major events calendar over the next 12 months which already has other significant national events including July’s National MotorX, September’s Victorian Teachers Games and Australian Junior Road Cycling Championships and next January’s Tennis Senior Australia events,” Mr Rajaratnam said. “I would like to congratulate the Shepparton BMX Club who continue to deliver significant events to the region stimulating economic benefit to our business and tourism industries. “The event will see more than 1000 visitors with 500 competitors travelling from interstate to compete on our world class track.”
The series will start with rounds one and two to be held at Nerang BMX Club on the Gold Coast, Queensland, from January 1 – 2, before the series moves north to the Cairns BMX Club, for rounds three and four to be held over the Australia Day long weekend on January 23 - 24. Shepparton BMX Club, Victoria, will then host rounds 5 and 6 to be held over the weekend of February 6 – 7, before the series concludes with round seven at the soon to be built Bathurst track during the annual National Championships. The series will see the best domestic and international riders descend on each of these locations to compete for points to build towards the honour of becoming crowned the 2016 National Series champion.
