The Awards recognise outstanding contributions to cultural heritage conservation, research, education, promotion, interpretation, training and awareness-raising. They aim to honour individuals and organisations whose work has promoted and conserved the region’s diverse cultural heritage, while promoting examples of good conservation practice and guidance.
The 2023 Awards coincide with the Australian Heritage Festival in April and May 2023, and will be delivered by Greater Shepparton City Council, in association with the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee. Nominations are now open for the categories of:
- Reuse of a Heritage Place
- Restoration of Heritage Place
- Maintenance of a Heritage Place
- Best Research Publication or Manuscript
- Other Publication
- Student/Youth
- Interpretive Signage
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Heritage
- Community and Multicultural Events and Tourism
- Other Contribution
Cultural heritage can be tangible, including buildings, monuments, landscapes, books and works of art and artefacts, and also intangible, including folklore, traditions, language and knowledge. Places of cultural heritage significance can include a site, area, land, landscape, building or other work, group of buildings or other works, and may include components, contents, spaces and views.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali encouraged residents to have a read of the 2023 Cultural Heritage Awards Guidelines to see whether they were eligible to be nominated for an award category.
“Greater Shepparton is home to many places of local, regional and state heritage significance and these awards recognise any important community work done in this space,” he said.
“Some of these impressive buildings of heritage significance date back more than 50,000 years and are a true testament to our region’s history.”
Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee’s Marjorie Earl said the awards were an important event on the region’s calendar.
“The Awards are a way of recognising the outstanding contributions to cultural heritage conservation, research, education, promotion, interpretation, training and awareness-raising undertaken by individuals and groups across the region,” she said.
“The continued conservation, interpretation and dissemination of the significance of these places for present and future generations is a crucial way of ensuring that the region’s tangible and intangible heritage survives.”
Nominations for the Greater Shepparton Cultural Heritage Awards 2023 close on Monday 20 February 2023, 5pm. A short-list of nominations will be prepared on, or before, Monday 27 February 2023.
Nominated work must relate to the five years prior to the closing date. Entries can be nominated in more than one category, with a separate nomination form for each category. The 2023 Cultural Heritage Awards will be awarded at a ceremony to be held on Saturday 22 April 2023, presented by Council and the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee.
