Beautiful wins for Shepparton lake and partnership

Greater Shepparton has won awards in two categories of the Keep Victoria Beautiful Sustainable Cities Awards for 2016 which was held at the State Library of Victoria on Friday 15 July.

Greater Shepparton won an award for Victoria Park Lake in the 'Clean Beach/Waterways' category and RiverConnect won an award in the 'Community Government Partnerships' category.

In addition five other programs were finalists:

  • Word and Mouth in the 'Young Leaders' category
  • Wetlands on Victoria Park Lake 'Environmental Sustainability' category
  • Wetlands at Gemmill Swamp in the 'Protection of the Environment' category
  • Refugee Garden at the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton in the 'Resource Recovery' category
  • Community Plans in the 'Community Action and Leadership' category.

Greater Shepparton was also a finalist in the overall Sustainable City of Victoria Award and competed against Geelong, Yarra, Melton and Stonnington councils.

Greater Shepparton councillor Jenny Houlihan and several staff from various Council departments were able to spend a day with the Keep Victoria Beautiful judge showcasing the various projects around Shepparton prior to the award night.

Mayor Cr Dinny Adem said the wins are fantastic for Greater Shepparton. “A win in these categories raises the profile of Greater Shepparton and acknowledges the hard work put in by many people,” said Cr Adem.

“All the projects show how committed volunteers, the community and Council can come together to achieve wonderful results for our municipality,” said Cr Adem.

‘The awards ceremony provided the perfect opportunity for community groups, councils and volunteers from across Victoria to celebrate their projects and stories and to recognise their collective commitment to keeping Victoria beautiful,’ said Cr Adem.
