Budget commitment marks progress for Shepparton rail services

The Victorian Budget 2026/27 includes funding that supports the delivery of up to nine weekday return services on the Shepparton line, which would almost double the current number of weekday services. While the announcement does not confirm when these additional services will be introduced, Council sees the commitment as an important step forward in improving rail connectivity for the region.

The budget also confirms funding for five return services on Saturdays and Sundays, responding to long standing community calls for better weekend travel options. Improved rail frequency is critical for Greater Shepparton, supporting access to jobs, education, health services and tourism, and providing a more reliable alternative to car travel.

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said this budget commitment was a positive step forward for Greater Shepparton, following years of advocating for improved Shepparton train services.

“We had to see a budget commitment by the Victorian Government to enable these additional services to be implemented, and it is great to have now received that. Our priority is now to seek clarity around when these additional services will be delivered,” he said.

“Doubling weekday services will significantly improve connection for our community and provide access to jobs, education and essential services. It will move us closer to a better-connected Greater Shepparton.

“Council will continue to advocate for clear timeframes, so these commitments translate into real improvements for passengers using the Shepparton line.”
