Council adopts Greater Shepparton Heritage Strategy 2019

Council adopted the Greater Shepparton Heritage Strategy 2019 at the Ordinary Council Meeting held on Tuesday, 19 November 2019.

Greater Shepparton’s richly layered history, dating back over 50,000 years, has created a wide variety of cultural heritage places of local, regional and state significance that add character, appeal and interest to our municipality.

The Strategy seeks to promote actions that conserve and integrate the fabric of our heritage in ways that meet the contemporary cultural and social needs of our diverse community.

It proposes actions that enable obtaining and sharing of historic information across the community, that aim to foster social inclusion by recognising the histories and contributions of our multicultural communities, that promote the continuation of Council's free Heritage Advisory Service to assist owners of heritage properties and related interested parties, to support the activities of local heritage-based community groups, and to promote heritage events, such as the Heritage Open Days.

The Strategy was prepared in conjunction with the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee, and Council’s Heritage Advisor, Heritage Concepts Pty Ltd. It builds on the foundations laid by the Committee since its inception in 2011, the three preceding heritage studies undertaken by Council since 2001, and increasing recognition of the wellbeing benefits offered through connection with and understanding of our shared past.

Greater Shepparton Mayor Cr Seema Abdullah said Council was pleased to support the community’s growing interest in its heritage.

“Greater Shepparton has a wide variety of unique and precious places and objects, including the reminders of thousands of generations of Traditional Owners, houses and public buildings from different periods, innovative industrial and agricultural developments, pioneering irrigation practices, and World War 2 internment camps. All of these elements comprise an invaluable legacy for current and future generations,” she said.
