Greater Shepparton City Council approved the allocation of $10,613.60 to four community groups under the Community Arts Grants Round Two – 2020/2021 at the April Ordinary Council Meeting.
The Aldara Yenara Australia Aboriginal Corporation, Awaken Dance Theatre Company Inc, Art in the HeART Project Group and Gowrie Street Primary School Community Hub will each receive financial assistance for art projects after submitting successful applications.
The aim of the Community Arts Grant funding is to facilitate projects which achieve some or all of the following objectives:
Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe, said the quality of the applications received in Round Two was of an extremely high standard.
“Thank you to all the community groups that submitted applications for this round of Community Arts Grants,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“It is extremely important we support and promote the arts and culture within our community.
“Council are pleased to be able to offer financial assistance to these four community groups to assist them in bringing their ideas to life.”

To provide a school holiday program that coincides with NAIDOC Week 2021 for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, aged 6 to 17, to work with Aboriginal community artists. The program will allow young Aboriginal and Torres Strait children to connect to both artists and Elders, respected persons and community members, to learn about their culture, through art, yarning and sharing a meal.
A collaborative piece with the Australian Ballet Outreach & Education Team to be part of the 2021 Shepparton Festival program in June. The performance of "Within" plans to feature an atmospheric soundtrack, lighting, artwork projections using animation, costumes, make up and props. Awaken Dance is planning to deliver the work at Westside Performing Arts Centre.
The Art in the HeART project aims to secure 10 empty shops in the Maude Street Mall and CBD and offer artists and arts groups the opportunity to occupy the shops for one month over the duration of the Shepparton Festival. Art in the HeART will open concurrently with the Shepparton Festival and the event will run for one month. It is believed this opportunity will provide social engagement and financial gain as the artists will have the ability to earn income from exhibition sales or other activities they choose to deliver.
In this project three culturally different women’s groups (First Nations, North End Anglo-Australian and Afghan) will tell their stories through textile projects. This is a project designed for women to learn new skills, explore their own and other cultures, engage with others, and to foster mental health, and self-expression. The work will then be shown in an exhibition accompanied by a podcast in which the women tell their stories about growing up and/or living in the north end of Shepparton.
