Greater Shepparton City Council awarded the contract for the manufacture and supply of the purple glass bin and the rural green bin at the October Council Meeting, forming the next stage of the Kerbside Transition Program.
The Kerbside Transition Program was established by Council to facilitate a transition towards improved recovery of recyclable items, which includes the Victorian Government’s direction to implement single stream recycling of glass.
Council began the bin collection frequency change roll out of the Kerbside Transition Program in Kialla and Tatura in March this year, and the remainder of the municipality last week, with the initial stages seeing changes to the kerbside collection frequency.
As part of the program, a purple lid glass only bin will be rolled out in 2024 and is required for every property with a kerbside collection within Greater Shepparton.
The rural Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) green lid bin also forms part of the changes to improve the circular economy. As part of this, a FOGO bin will be made available to residential rural properties within Greater Shepparton that have a kerbside collection but don’t currently have a FOGO bin service.
The contract for $1.4 million was awarded to Mastec Australia Pty Ltd who will carry out the manufacture, assembly and delivery of the purple glass bin and the rural green lid bin across the municipality. Council received funding from DEECA as part of the Glass Early Adopter Fund for the purple bin purchase.
“This contract is part of Council delivering a more sustainable waste model. We are working to divert waste from landfill and the introduction of the purple lid bin and a rural green lid bin forms part of the next stage of this kerbside transition,” Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali said.
