Greater Shepparton City Council is seeking feedback from residents, students and parents following recent changes to traffic and parking arrangements surrounding the new Greater Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC).
In late 2021, Council prepared a Local Area Traffic Management Plan (LATM) for the GSSC and implemented its recommendations before the opening of the GSSC. The LATM made a series of recommendations to ensure that the local road network could cater for an increase in staff and students accessing the site during pick-up and drop-off times, while safely catering for pedestrian, cycling and vehicle movements around the precinct.
The implementation of the LATM resulted in traffic management and parking changes around the school site, including the introduction of line marking, changes to parking, and prohibiting certain right-hand turn movements on to and off Hawdon Street during pick-up and drop-off times.
Council is now undertaking further work to review and monitor traffic movements around the GSSC to ensure that the recommendations implemented under the LATM are operating as intended. This work will inform a much larger study known as the Shepparton Inner North Local Area Traffic Management Plan (Shepparton Inner North LATM).
To inform this, Council is inviting students, parents, staff and residents who use the GSSC site to provide first-hand feedback about how traffic is operating around the school. Council is keen to hear feedback specifically on traffic management, parking restrictions during pick-up and drop-off times, all-day parking occupancy, pedestrian and cycling routes, and any safety concerns that these groups have.
“The community feedback received will be important in shaping how traffic is managed around the Greater Shepparton Secondary College going forward” Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said.
“Prior to the school opening, Council made several changes in the area to improve traffic flow and pedestrian access however we now want to know whether these changes are working. I encourage the community to provide their feedback to help us further improve the traffic management in the area.”
Feedback received will be used to inform any further changes required to traffic management and the parking regime across this larger study area. This expanded piece of work will seek to understand the traffic impacts that the GSSC is having on the broader road network, including interaction with neighbouring schools and businesses on local streets and arterial roads.
Students, parents and residents are encouraged to leave their feedback on Council’s Shaping Greater Shepp webpage, which is open now until Friday 18 March 2022.
Shaping Greater Shepparton
Council will conduct further community consultation about any proposed changes as part of the Shepparton Inner North LATM around mid-2022.
